While wearing your braces, brushing and flossing can be more difficult, but it is more important than ever to maintain proper oral hygiene, as food can get stuck between your braces and teeth.

So, make sure you brush for two minutes twice a day and floss at least once a day.

How do braces work?

The first step of your braces process is taking records: Dr. Lee and his team will collect photos and X-rays of your mouth. We’ll use our iTero Element scanner to scan each of your teeth and the layout of your gums and mouth.

After the X-Ray and optional scan, Dr. Lee will use this information to create your customized treatment plan, including how each tooth needs to move to get it in the best possible position. For example, if you have some teeth that need to tilt, Dr. Lee places those brackets differently than those that need to be turned.

After attaching your brackets, Dr. Lee will insert the wire. Bends in the wire will provide different types of pressure on different teeth to guide them into their new, straighter positions.

What can I expect from today’s metal braces?

Metal braces are the most common type of braces, and today, they also happen to be more comfortable than ever before. Sleeker brackets and lighter wires improve the appearance and feel of these braces, meaning less irritation in your mouth.

While it’s normal to experience some discomfort during your treatment, various tips and tricks, like applying wax to brackets or using salt water rinses, can help.

How long will I be in braces?
